Cyclone Michaung: Schools, offices to remain shut in TN and Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI: Schools in Chennai and Andhra Pradesh remain closed today as a precautionary measure in response to the looming threat of Cyclone Michaung. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning, predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The affected regions include Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranippettai, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichy, Vellore, Thirupattur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Salem districts. The severity of the situation prompted authorities to take preventive measures, closing schools to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Cyclone Michaung, classified as a severe cyclonic storm, is anticipated to make landfall along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, specifically between Nellore and Machilipatnam. The storm is accompanied by moderate rainfall and gusty winds in Bapatla district.
As of the latest IMD update, Cyclone Michaung is positioned over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal off the south Andhra Pradesh coast. It is expected to cross south Andhra Pradesh during the forenoon of December 5, with a maximum wind speed ranging from 90 to 100 km/h.
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken proactive steps in response to the impending cyclone. Schools in the affected districts are closed on December 5, and the Spandana program has been cancelled for the day. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay at home, and the police department is on high alert to provide necessary assistance.
The IMD has issued a ‘red’ alert for certain districts in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh due to the cyclonic storm’s anticipated landfall. The affected districts, including West Godavari, Konaseema, Nellore, Prakasam, Krishna, Bapatla, Guntur, Tirupati, Chittoor, Annamayya, and YSR Kadapa, are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall.
Farmers in the region, especially those with ready-to-harvest crops, face significant concerns due to the cyclone’s potential impact. Rescue and relief teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Coast Guard, Army, and Navy are on standby in the cyclone-affected districts.
What is behind the name of cyclone Michaung?
Cyclone Michaung’s name, pronounced “migjaum,” comes from a suggestion by Myanmar, one of the member nations of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). They chose this name because it signifies strength and resilience, qualities they hope the affected communities will embody during this challenging time.
Cyclone Michaung is the fourth tropical cyclone of the year over the Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Michaung will be the first storm to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast after cyclone Gulab, which developed in September 2021. Though cyclone Asani had come close to the AP and Odisha coast in 2022, it didn’t make landfall.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has made teams available in the cyclone-affected districts in the state. Rescue and relief teams of the Coast Guard, Army and Navy along with ships and aircraft have been kept on standby, a statement by the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) said.
