“He was positive until the end but this was one battle he could not fight anymore. He leaves behind a wonderful musical legacy and many happy memories for many people.

“He will be sadly missed by everyone who loved him. Shine bright our big star.”

The 53-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer in 2023 and had been regularly updating his treatment journey on social media.

Last month he wrote that he had been battling multiple infections, saying “last week has been my worst health week ever”.

“I’m back on antibiotic tablets but things could slip back again at any moment.”

On May 25 he wrote that he was infection free and “already have the energy to defeat this fully”.

Dario G originally consisted of a trio of DJs and producers — Scott Rosser, Paul Spencer, and Stephen Spencer.

The group’s biggest hit was their 1997 track Sunchyme which reached No.2 on the UK singles chart.

A year later they released Carnaval de Paris for the FIFA World Cup in France which also did well, reaching No. 5 on the UK singles chart.

Scott and Stephen later left the band to pursue other projects.

The news of Paul’s passing was felt by many fans and fellow musicians, with tributes remembering him as a true performer even while he was receiving treatment in hospital.

“So, so sad to hear this,” one person wrote.

“When we were in hospital last year you were so kind, talking to everybody on the ward, and even playing musical requests on your keyboard.

“You selflessly gave of yourself to others.”

DJ and record producer Sigala said Paul was a “true inspiration” who brought joy to so many.

“Paul told me many times over the last year ‘go get yourself checked’ so I’m passing on that message to anyone reading this, as I’m sure he would want me to. Our health should be more of a priority!

“He will be missed greatly. Sending love to his family, rest in peace buddy xx.”
