A driver in Oregon has been captured on video careening off the highway and plummeting 200 feet in a reported case of distracted driving, reports Oregon Live. In a dashcam video shared on the site, the driver of a black car can be seen crashing off the roadway and vanishing out of frame.
The rather alarming footage, which is available to watch below, was shared across social media earlier this week. In it, an Oregon driver is seen tootling along Highway 224 in Clackamas County. As they approach a corner on the road, a car ahead is caught plunging from the safety of the tarmac.
In a Facebook post from Oregon State Police, officers said the car in the clip then plummeted 200 feet, coming to a rest at the base of the cliff. The driver of the car, who has not been identified by authorities, was then treated in hospital. According to the social media post:
The vehicle drove off the roadway after the driver took their eyes off the roadway and landed approximately 200 feet down an embankment. The driver was able to self-extricate from the vehicle before emergency personnel arrived.
Emergency responders deployed a rope system to carry the driver up the hill to safety. The driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash.
Law enforcement put the cause of the crash down to distracted driving, and warned that the victim was “fortunate to have survived this crash.”
The crash in Oregon comes less than a week after another driver plummeted from a cliff. Earlier this week, a driver in Hawaii had to be rescued at sea after their rental crashed off the roadway and onto the rocks below. Thankfully, in both cases, rescuers were on hand and nobody was killed.
