The Miami Dolphins had not defeated an opponent with a winning record in 15 weeks but on Sunday they clinched a playoff spot by beating the Dallas Cowboys, who have a winning record. The Dolphins won with a 22-20 score by relying on kicker Jason Sanders, who made his fifth field goal as time expired.
The quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, doesn’t pay attention to the team’s previous record, stating, “I think if we were to listen to any of the narratives, I don’t think we’d be in the position we’re in.”
Both teams didn’t play up to their full potential with the Cowboys settling for one touchdown in three red zone trips, and the Dolphins finishing 1-of-4. The Dolphins’ win improved their record to 11-4 while the Cowboys dropped to 10-5.
Dallas will be hosting the Detroit Lions next while the Dolphins will close the season with games against the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills.
Cowboys threatened late but Dolphins rebounded
The Cowboys briefly took the lead in the first half, but the Dolphins responded by extending the lead with a field goal and a touchdown. Both teams struggled to score in the second half and Dallas took a late 20-19 lead, only to be overcome by Miami’s offense, led by Tagovailoa.
Tagovailoa completed 24 of 37 pass attempts for 293 yards and a touchdown, while Prescott completed 20 of 32 pass attempts for 253 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins will be counting on Tyreek Hill as their top receiver after he returned from an ankle injury to catch nine of 14 targets for 99 yards. Their upcoming games against tough opponents will be crucial for their playoff hopes.
