DU’s new degree includes the mother’s name besides security features

The addition of the mother’s name is about giving due respect to both parents.
The University of Delhi (DU) will soon have ‘currency-like’, non-tearable polythene degrees with an invisible ink logo and a hidden image to enhance the security features. Besides the enhanced security features to avoid forgery and duplication, DU has also decided to give prominence to the mother’s name in the degree.
The decision to have a mother’s name has been brought to prominence after UGC’s directive in 2014 to have a mother’s name on the degree or certificate issued by any college, institute, or university. The UGC had sent out the directive to help the children of unwed, divorced, and separated mothers avoid the embarrassment caused by the column ‘father’s name’.
DU degrees distributed in the 2024 convocation will include the mother’s name along with the student’s name and coloured photo. Talking to Education Times, Ajay Arora, an officer on special duty (OSD), Examination Branch, DU, said the decision was long due. “Besides the enhanced security features, the degree will have this fundamental change. Many students raised by single mothers reached out to the university to include their mother’s name in the degree. The University addressed their requests on a one-on-one basis, but this year we have included it in the degree to give a permanent solution,” says Arora.
The directive is more about giving due respect to mothers or both parents in general, says Arora.
Newly added security features will aid in the easy recognition of genuine certificates. Apart from that, these certificates will be waterproof, heat-resistant, and resilient to various chemicals, and their colour resistance and quality can be maintained even at temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius.
DU is also planning to change the graduation trencher (gown) worn during the convocation ceremony. “To give an Indian touch to the convocation ceremony, we are designing a traditional Indian ethnic outfit that can be worn during the ceremony. This will help students highlight their rich Indian culture,” adds Arora.
