eThekwini updates landfill sites policies as waste collection resumes

Starting Monday, 8 April, the eThekwini Municipality has issued a notice to residents, clients, and the general public. They are informed of a significant change in the waste disposal protocol at its landfill sites.

eThekwini landfill sites resume standard operations

eThekwini individuals will no longer be permitted to personally bring household waste for disposal. Moreover, this decision stems from the resumption and stabilisation of the normal weekly refuse collection services.

Effective immediately, the landfill sites will revert to their standard operational schedules. The public is strongly advised to take note of the specific waste types accepted at each landfill site to ensure compliance.

The Bisasar Road Landfill Site welcomes garden refuse, builders’ rubble, sand, and cover material. Similarly, the Mariannhill Landfill Site accepts garden refuse, builders’ rubble, sand, and cover material.

Conversely, the Lovu Landfill Site caters to domestic waste, business waste devoid of hazardous materials, waste packaging, garden refuse, builders’ rubble, sand, and cover material.

Operating hours for the landfill sites are from Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 16:30, and on weekends from 7:00 to 15:30. Customers are kindly reminded to consider the applicable landfill charges and tariffs.

The City bans condemned food waste and special items at landfill sites

Additionally, it is emphasised that the disposal of condemned food waste and special items is strictly prohibited at all of the eThekwini’s landfill sites. Furthermore, customers are strongly encouraged to explore alternative arrangements with private facilities for the disposal of such items.

This directive follows the recent opening of eThekwini Municipality’s landfill sites to the public. Waste collection services were disrupted due to a strike by municipal workers.

eThekwini City calls for stakeholder cooperation in waste management

The City urges cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure effective waste management practices and environmental sustainability.
