To the sadness of Evil fans, including here at io9, the underrated yet consistently delightful horror drama wrapped up its four-season run today, streaming the last of its four farewell episodes on Paramount+. But while the end felt mostly satisfying, the episode conspicuously left things in a place where, y’know, if some other streamer were to pick up the show, the story could go on.
Speaking to Deadline, Evil creators Robert and Michelle King unfortunately didn’t have any big news to share about the show’s future. They did, however, give off the distinct sense of putting some hopeful vibes out into the world. Robert King told the trade “it feels like there’ll be two more seasons … we wish we could do more … because it’s just cool. It’s a fun idea, a fun cast.”
He also suggested a reason for the show’s cancellation. “If we’re a victim of anything, it’s timing. Obviously, since the strike, but also the Wall Street reevaluation of the business, there’s been a change in attitude on things. And obviously, as you probably know, with Paramount+ there is as some reevaluation of what they’re doing and the decision was made to end the show. And I think the popularity of the show didn’t really hit until after some of those decisions were made.”
While Michelle King noted “We’re real delighted that it is, in fact, popular on Netflix, that it’s gotten a ton of viewers. You know, really all you want is your work to be seen,” both Kings declined to comment if they’ve had any meetings about taking the show elsewhere.
In the end, she said, “I felt proud of the show and grateful that we did get these last four episodes to land the plane.”
Robert King also pointed out that as creators, they prefer leaving a few dangling threads at the finish. “I don’t think we’re into wrapping things with either a dark or a pretty bow. It’s always about, ‘Okay, let the audience imagine what happens that next week and that next month.’ The problem is, if you cut it off, there’s no way for the audience to kind of fill in the gaps that you left.”
If you’ve watched “Fear of the End,” the Evil season finale, definitely head to Deadline to read more of the interview; the Kings get into some intriguing details about that, uh, devilish reveal in the very last scene. Evil seasons one through four, including the four bonus episodes, are now streaming on Paramount+.
