Ex-Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has been named the frontrunner to succeed Klopp by sportslens, despite only joining current side Tottenham from the Hoops in the summer.

Postecoglou is a boyhood Liverpool fan and has guided Spurs to within three points of the top four in his first season in the Premier League.

Another former Old Firm gaffer is also in the running for the Anfield hotseat, with Steven Gerrard listed amongst potential Klopp replacements.

The Liverpool legend won Rangers’ historic 55th league title in his time in charge at Ibrox, before leaving for Aston Villa in 2021 and later being appointed manager of Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.

Also named as a contender by the bookies is Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who was in charge of Liverpool from 2012-2015.

The Northern Irishman was replaced by Klopp when he was sacked by the Reds, before being appointed manager of Celtic for the first time the following year.

Other names thought to be in the running for the job are Bayer Leverkusen boss and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, Klopp’s assistant coach Pep Lijnders and Brighton gaffer Roberto De Zerbi.

Klopp explained his decision to leave after almost nine years in charge at Anfield in an emotional interview with the club, revealing his love for Liverpool.

He said: “I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”
