Ex-Sundowns star Vuyo Mere to hang his boots end of the season?

Former Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Vuyo Mere has hinted at retirement at the end of the season.

The 40-year-old has had a career spanning over 20 years making him one of the most capped players in the history of the PSL.

The veteran defender has only played one match for TS Galaxy so far this season. Having struggled for game time since joining the Mpumalanga-based side two years ago, Vuyo Mere might be forced to hang his boots end of the season.

Speaking to FARPost last month, the defender admitted the thought of retirement crossed his mind

“I’m a firm believer in God. He has carried me this far in my career. What I believe in is not worrying about tomorrow,” Mere told the publication.

“We might plan but God decides, so at the moment I’m still a soccer player, if tomorrow I retire, I’ll leave everything in God’s hands.

Vuyo Mere could retire at the end of this season

“I’m still a soccer player, and I have a contract until the end of the season. So the thought of retiring has come into my mind because everywhere I go, people are asking when I’m retiring.

“But for me, I’ll just take one step at a time. I’ve got a family and a team that support me. It’s nice to be in a family like TS Galaxy. You feel important and you feel wanted,” Vuyo Mere added.

“Truly speaking, I can’t say I will retire tomorrow or next week. At the moment, I’m still focusing on my career, and whatever happens tomorrow is in God’s hands.”

Vuyo Mere started his career with Hellenic before joining Sundowns in 2004. He spent six years with Masandawana winning the league twice during the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons. Having left Chloorkop in 2011, Mere signed with Platinum Stars where he played arguably his best football. He won the Telkom Knockout and MTN8 titles in 2013 with Dikwena to solidify his status as the club legend.

Eleven years later, Vuyo Mere is a PSL legend, having played over 400 games.
