A number of areas in the central belt are affected by the warning inlcuding Angus, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Falkirk, Fife, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Grampian, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire are also covered by the alert.

The full impact of Storm Ciaran will be felt on Thursday in the UK.

Concern then switches to the southeast of the country, when an area south of Edinburgh has been handed another yellow rain warning.

Heavy rain associated with the storm could bring some disruption to northeast England and southeast Scotland.

Here, there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, power cuts could occur and some communities could be cut off.

The Met Office said: “Periods of heavy rain associated with Storm Ciarán will affect parts of northeast England and southeast Scotland during Thursday and early Friday.

“Rainfall amounts are likely to reach 20-30 mm widely, with 40-60 mm accumulating over high ground, including the Cheviots, North Pennines and North York Moors.

“Strong easterly winds, becoming northerly by Friday morning, will accompany the rainfall, possibly exacerbating any impacts.”
