A FAMILY are devastated after their beloved dog was mauled to death in a brutal attack on New Year’s Day.
The Cunningham family’s pet chihuahua Yuzuki was killed in a field by another dog near their home in Milton, Glasgow.
The pooch known as Yuzu or Yuki died within seconds after the attack and the family raced her to the vet.
But tragically, the one-year-old pup was dead upon arrival.
Mum Frances told the Glasgow Times: “We’re all heartbroken.
“We don’t know what to do with ourselves.
“We just feel so lost.
“Our daughter Ashleigh – who we bought the dog for last Christmas is just devastated.
“It feels like we lost a child.”
After Yuzuki was attacked Frances’ husband John raced her to Vets Now at Charing Cross.
But unfortunately, there was nothing the vet could do to save her.
The 60-year-old mum added: “I don’t think Yuzuki would have felt anything because it was over within seconds.
“It just came out of nowhere.
“I don’t know how many red lights John ran to get her to the emergency vets at Charing Cross but she was dead on arrival.
“She was such a cute wee thing, just a teeny chihuahua.
“She was so young and it was so sudden.
“She did not deserve to be killed like this.”
The family are now planning to start a petition calling for dogs to be put down if they cause the death of another animal.
The family said: “If a dog bites someone one time, there’s no need to put it down.
“It could have been triggered by anything.
“But if a dog has previously attacked and hurt another dog, then kills another – there should be something in the law that says it can be put down because how many more dogs could it kill?”
The attack was reported to the police but the police have said they have passed the incident on to the relevant department in the local authority.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.45pm on Monday, 1 January, 2024, we were made aware of a dog attacking another dog in the Castlebay Place area of Glasgow.
“The dog which was attacked subsequently died.
“Officers are liaising with the local authority.”
A Vets Now spokesperson told the Glasgow Times: “Yuzuki was brought into the Vets Now hospital on New Year’s Day after a dog attack.

“Unfortunately, she had already passed away when she arrived so our vet was unable to do anything to preserve her life.
“Our thoughts are with Yuzuki’s family at this sad time.”
