Leading analytics company Opensignal has released a new report measuring Australia’s mobile network experience including 5G performance.
The report tracks a total of 15 metrics including video, live video, game experience, download and upload speeds, coverage and consistency.
Optus was the clear standout with a total of eight wins and one tie with Vodafone for availability.

Here’s how each telco’s network performed.
Optus’s fast 5G download speeds
Optus came in first for the fastest average 5G download speeds. It measured in at 208.7Mbps compared with Telstra’s 180.1Mbps and Vodafone’s 137.9Mbps. It was the sixth time the telco clinched that category in a row.
It also came first in the overall and 5G awards for video, live video and game experiences.

Vodafone sees improvement on overall experience
If Optus was the clear winner, then Vodafone came in at the number two spot. Regarding 5G uploads speeds, Vodafone just came ahead on 15.8Mbps to Optus’ 15.3Mbps and Telstra on 14.5Mbps.
Vodafone also scored highest for both overall download and upload experience following the shutdown of its 3G network. As each network provider shuts down 3G it can re-deploy the unused spectrum to improve its other services.

Telstra’s coverage hard to beat
While it may not have taken home any awards for speed, Australia’s largest telco did come in first on both overall and 5G coverage experience. Rated between 0 and 10 points, Telstra scored 9.5 and 6.2 respectively. Optus came second scoring 8.3 and 3.8 while Vodafone which has the smallest coverage footprint scored 6.3 and 3.1.
