Final Thoughts on Week 18: Jaguars vs. Titans

JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2023 season, Jaguars “experts” – Tony Boselli, Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Kainani Stevens – will analyze the following day’s Jaguars matchup.

The Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn.

Tony Boselli, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Left Tackle

  • The Jaguars will win if: They play a clean game with no turnovers, no mental errors, minimal penalties and giving the Titans zero gifts. We won’t know until game time if quarterback Trevor Lawrence is playing. Regardless, if they don’t beat themselves and don’t allow Titans running back Derrick Henry to go crazy, they will win.
  • The Titans will win if: They win the turnover margin by two or more and Henry has a huge day. This Titans team is missing their best defensive lineman in Jeffery Simmons, playing their backup quarterback and has a poor offensive line. They will need the Jaguars to help them by turning the ball over to get a win before they head off to vacation.
  • As Boselli sees it: The AFC South is sitting right in front of the Jaguars and if they don’t beat themselves, it’s theirs. I think they get out to a fast start and the Titans start thinking about their offseason vacations about midway through the second quarter. Jags win by double digits.

Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars

  • The Jaguars will win if: They continue to play defense as they did last week against Carolina. They covered and really got after the quarterback. The Titans will want to run the ball per usual, so the Jags have to win first down. Keep Tennessee behind the sticks. On offense, it’s possible the Jags can get Trevor Lawrence and wide receiver Christian Kirk and Zay Jones back, which would be huge. The offense would be more like the team that started 8-3 before Kirk got hurt. This could be their most healthy and complete team in a while.
  • The Titans will win if: As he has done in the past, Henry gets going and they run the ball. And they will need a few takeaways. The Titans probably will have to win the turnover battle to win the game.
  • As Frangie sees it: The Jags have the better team, have everything at stake and since Pederson has been here, they have played well when it matters most. I expect them to play well again, which means winning and making the playoffs.

Jeff Lageman, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Defensive End

  • The Jaguars will win if: They play clean on both sides of the football. Protecting the football, minimizing penalties and being assignment clean with communication all fall under the umbrella of playing clean football. This is what enabled the Jaguars to break a four-game losing streak last Sunday and will propel them to a second consecutive divisional title.
  • The Titans will win if: They can get some takeaways that would allow King Henry to get rolling on the ground in what could be his last game with the Titans. The Titans’ offensive line has been a weakness for a couple years now (just ask quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Will Levis) and if Henry gets wound up this Titans team will gain confidence.
  • As Lageman sees it: This game is similar in many ways to last week’s for the Jaguars with a couple big differences. Vrabel is a really good coach and will have his team ready to battle 60 minutes – and the Titans are a divisional foe that has a history of being a thorn in the Jaguars’ side. The Jaguars will get a focused performance by whoever is playing quarterback and at wide receiver as their head football coach, Doug Pederson, is also pretty damn good.

Brent Martineau, Action Sports Jax Sports Director

  • The Jaguars will win if: They win the turnover battle. I think the Jags will sign up for the similar plan that helped them win against Carolina. The Jaguars must avoid giving the football away and giving hope and momentum to the Titans. If the Jaguars can get an early lead and hold onto the football, it should be a good day in Nashville.
  • The Titans will win if: Henry has one more monster day against the Jaguars. The game flow will determine how long Tennessee can stick with Henry to carry them in this one. He only has gone over 100 yards three times this season and he will need his biggest game of 2023 to give the Titans a victory in likely his final game in Nashville.
  • As Martineau sees it: This looks like a good matchup on paper. The Jaguars have won three consecutive meetings against Tennessee. Doesn’t everyone have a feeling this one won’t be easy? I think the Jaguars are healthier and on a mission to get back to the playoffs. The Jaguars will pull away late for a 24-13 win.
