Freeway crash: People rescued after vehicle rollover near Powis Street in Mount Hawthorn

Three people have been seriously injured after a car collided with two other vehicles and rolled several times in the air before coming to rest on its roof in a nearby construction site.

The white ute was left a mangled wreck after the crash just off the Mitchell Freeway in Mt Hawthorn about 5.40am on Tuesday.

Police say the ute was leaving the freeway at the northbound off-ramp on to Powis Street when it ploughed into two other vehicles — a Volkswagen sedan and a Mazda hatchback.

The collision caused the ute to become airborne and roll multiple times before it came to rest on its roof.

The crash forced the closure of Powis Street eastbound between Harborne Street and the Mitchell Freeway as crews worked to treat the injured and clear the vehicles and debris scattered across the road.

A St John WA spokeswoman said six ambulances attended the scene.

The male driver of the ute, who is in his 30s, was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital under lights and sirens. He remained in a critical condition on Tuesday night.

The 46-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen and a 48-year-old female passenger were also taken to RPH.

The two occupants from the Volkswagen are in a stable condition in hospital.

The crash caused chaos during Perth’s busy peak hour as traffic backed up on feeder roads in addition to the closure of a section of Powis Street.

Powis Street reopened just before 11am, but traffic is still slow in the area.

Officers from the traffic enforcement group north are investigating.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the area at the time of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online via www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
