Fringe Perth review: Patrick McPherson pulled off ‘poetic’ performance during one-man show The Way Way Deep

One man shows are notoriously difficult to pull off – Patrick McPherson must not have gotten the memo.

This new piece of theatre will be touring the world, the world doesn’t know what’s coming and Perth is lucky for seeing it first.

This play covers a 20 year friendship, with ebbs and flows in seeing each other, becoming new people, becoming each other.

Musically driven in a way we haven’t experienced before, we wouldn’t class it as a musical, however it’s not your standard theatre experience either. This is an experience you must have for yourselves.

Perfect timed lighting and music queues had this show feeling polished and electric. Lightly comical, highly expressive; we were sunk and burning with Patrick on stage.

We’re honestly finding it difficult to write this review. There’s so much we could say but we have no desire to give away the plot. We laughed, were on the brink of tears, we were boogying and feeling called out in our seats (there’s a Black Eyed Peas reference that cut us).

Favourite moments? Sarria loved Patrick introducing us to the musical element right in the opening of the show. Cleverly done and impeccably timed, it was smooth easing the audience into his world.

The little jokes that hit just right, and the final moments of the play – her heart was in her throat.

Amanda was also incredibly moved by the ending. It’s an experience that’s burned into her eyes – the counting down, the smoke filled space. Even saying that she felt inspired by the show as she left to go and create something.

If you’re a theatre newby, this is a great introduction. If you’re a seasoned theatre goer, this is a delightful experience. It is for everyone.

We loved this so much we want to see his comedy show with his twin brother later on in the season.

Three Words: Poetic, emotional rollercoaster, connected

Amanda:⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Sarria: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
