LOCALS were left fuming after vandals torched a Union Jack flag at a village war memorial.
Residents of Shieldhall, near Falkirk, made the shock discovery on Saturday morning.
The display – containing two flag poles with a Scottish saltire and union flag – was set up to mark the 100th year of the village’s cenotaph.
The granite memorial was installed to remember the war dead during World War One with the flags joining flower baskets and photographs of fallen soldiers.
Volunteer Allan Weir, 60, said the incident was “heartbreaking” after the anniversary of the cenotaph was marked earlier this month.
He told BBC News: “There are a few of us in the village that look after our cenotaph.
“We change the flags regularly and plant flowers and we take great pride in looking after it.”
The monument is formally known as the Easter and Wester Shieldhill and Summerhouse War Memorial.
It carries the names of 20 fallen soldiers from World War One.
There are also nine names from World War Two.
