Gareth Southgate has ditched his suits for a “cuddly cardigan” ahead of this summer’s Euros.
The England manager wore an M&S three-piece at the World Cup in 2018, earning him praise from fashion fans.
In a recent chat with men’s fashion magazine GQ, the 53-year-old hung up his suit and opted for a £3,325 cardigan from Loro Piana and a crewneck sweater from the same brand. But we have found budget alternatives which will allow fans to steal his entire look for less than £100.
Southgate shared:”This year, it will be more short-sleeved knits than a suit and tie, because we’re trying to create a relaxed environment. When you’re working with young lads, you don’t want to be too stiff – in what you’re doing or wearing.”
While not a lot of us have £3k to spare for a cardigan, menswear retailer Jacamo saw views of its Stone Cotton Knitted Button Up Cardigan rise by 130% on the day Southgate shared his new style.
The timeless light jacket is designed with shoppers’ comfort in mind as it’s crafted from soft, lightweight cotton. Throw this over your T-shirt on cold evenings or wrap it over your shoulders for an elevated “old money” look.
Although it’s not baby cashmere like the Loro Piana piece, the cotton cardigan is finished with ribbed hems and cuffs and Jacamo recently reduced the price from £26 to £13, with sizes available from medium to 5XL. A wool and cashmere cardigan from COS could be a nice fit but that will set you back for £150.
To dress similar to Southgate, shoppers can try the Stone Grid Textured Knitted Crew Neck Jumper (now £18.50, was £37). It has a luxury waffle knit pattern similar to Reiss’ Millerson jumper.
Shaped in relaxed fit as the hem falls below waist, the sweater goes well with chinos or jeans. But you can try out the Danny Linen Mix Suit Trouser, £50, to make it an “ultimate Southgate look”.
The linen material is breathable and lightweight, making it perfect to wear in summer. The stone beige colour matches with the cardigan and sweater and they look similar to the Loro Piana outfit, minus the price tag.
Alternatively, H&M’s Slim Fit Linen suit trousers, £37.99, also fits nicely with the outfit but shoppers warn that you “might want to go for a size up”.
