Mines Rovers’ Hayden Dowson and Railways’ Kailen Leahy have been named co-captains for the Goldfields Football League’s tilt at the annual Great Southern Colts Carnival in Kulin this weekend.
They will lead a 25-player team named on Monday night that includes Kalgoorlie’s Brock Deinobili and Railways’ Kelby Virgin as joint vice-captains.
Under Rhett Foster, who again leads the group this weekend, the GFL have been consistent performers at the series that showcases regional WA’s best emerging talent.
But lifting the champion’s trophy has been elusive, with the local team foiled at the last hurdle in each of the past three seasons.
GFL were beaten by Peel in last year’s final by 26 points.
Foster’s assistant-coaches are Daniel Coughlan and Brodie Peterson.
Eight sides are taking part this weekend — the GFL are in Pool B with Great Southern, Ongerup and Lower South-West.
Pool A comprises Peel, Upper Great Southern, Eastern Districts and Esperance.
Goldfields opens its account on Saturday against Ongerup before clashing with Lower South-West and Great Southern.
Matches will be played across four 15-minute quarters with no time-on, with Sunday’s final between the respective pool winners set down for 12.30pm.
