She fits a leather boot to her leg but mum Kara, 27, says it wears out in two to three weeks and causes pain.

Scarlett has tried, and would prefer, a silicone prosthetic which can last around six months.

But health chiefs will not pay because they need replacing as she grows.

Kara said Scarlett, of Merthyr Tydfil, just wants to be like girls her age who paint their toenails and wear flip flops.

She added: “It is affecting her and I don’t want her to be thinking of that.”

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board urged the family to get in touch to discuss funding.

A statement read: “We are sorry to hear about Scarlett’s experience and fully appreciate the concerns her family have raised.

“We encourage them to get in touch with us directly so that we can explore this further.”
