Girl clears Agniveer to surprise father who retired from military service due to health complications

LUCKNOW: Kriti Rai was not even born when her father, Awadesh Kumar Rai, had to retire on medical grounds from the military police service after serving 12 years.
On Tuesday, the 20-year-old girl cleared the women’s Agniveer military police recruitment physical test and is now one step closer to joining the army.
Around 1,200 women candidates who had cleared the written test appeared for the physical test in two days (Monday and Tuesday) at Army Medical Corpsground in Lucknow from across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.In the test, candidates have to run 1,600 meters and clear the long jump and high jump.
As a C-certificate holder of NCC, Kriti managed to ace all the physical tests and will now appear for the medical test. This is her first attempt at Agniveer.
“I had this dream, to complete the pending service of my father, who retired from the Corps of Military Police due to poor health in the year 2000. It would be a surprise gift for him, once I make it into the merit list,” said Kriti, who has a BA Honours in Public Administration from Dr BR Ambedkar University Lucknow.
Hailing from Ghazipur district, next month Kriti is appearing for the officer’s category service selection board interview at Bhopal for a short service commission. Her younger brother Shubham Rai is also appearing for the combined defence service examination. The two siblings live in Ruchi Khand of Lucknow along with their parents.
Meanwhile, another girl, Khushi Singh, from a remote village in Rae Bareli district, who cleared the Agniveer physical test, said, “I’m an athlete. I want to compete on the world stage for 400 meters, and the army’s sports facility is a good medium to pursue this dream. My elder brother Tej Pratap Singh joined Agniveer last year, and he too is a 100 m athlete. It was he who inspired me to join the army.”
