The administration of the deemed university founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, also ordered the hostel management committee to investigate the matter further and ensure that no outside persons are allowed in the hostel.
Sources said that on Monday evening some students residing in the hostel informed the administration that some people who are not the students of the university have gathered at one of the PhD student’s room in the boys’ hostel which is located within the university campus on Ashram Road.
“After we got the complaints that smell of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is emitting from one of the rooms in the hostel, the head of the hostel management committee made a visit to the said room. He found that the PhD student was consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol with his friends who were not students of the university,” said Bharat Joshi, the acting vice chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith.
Gujarat Vidyapith does not allow non-vegetarian food in its campus, including the hostel premises while consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat.
Joshi said that after the expose, the student ran away from the hostel and his room was sealed by the committee head. “We have expelled the student and his admission has been cancelled,” Joshi said.
Sources said that the university has not lodged a police complaint against the student but has ordered an internal investigation how people who are not students are allowed to enter the hostel premises.
Sources said that the hostel management committee will investigate this matter and submit its report to the administration of the university. It is likely that the university will make rules stricter after this incident. However, this is not the first time that the university administration has come across incidents of alcohol consumption in its hostel campus, sources said.
