BERKELEY — Gunfire was heard Thursday morning near UC Berkeley’s Clark Kerr Campus track, but no injuries were reported and a search of the area for the suspect was ended after about six hours with no arrests announced, officials said.
In a UC Berkeley WarnMe update at 1:41 p.m., officials said “The area search at Clark Kerr Track and Hillside Campus has concluded. It has been determined that there is no longer a known threat to UC Berkeley campus locations. The lockdown has been lifted for all campus areas.”
Officials said police were still working to identify the suspect and make an arrest.
More than one shot was heard about 7:30 a.m. in the area of the track, which is close to the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve, authorities said. A hiker in the area said he heard at least two shots that he thought were from a small-caliber pistol.
It was not immediately known if the gunfire was directed at anyone or if it was just shots fired into the air.
Officers from both the UC Berkeley and Berkeley police departments swarmed the area looking for the shooter or shooters, remaining in the area until the search was called off.
Authorities did not provide a complete description, but said the suspect was a White male wearing a black shirt, black pants and a red backpack with hair described as “bleached” with possible red or orange highlights.
UC spokesman Roqua Montez said the Hillside Campus, which encompasses Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, UC Botanical Garden, Lawrence Hall of Science, Space Science Lab, Math Science Research Institute and the Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area was placed on lockdown.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call UC police at 510-642-6760.
