HBO orders eight-episode Green Lantern series

HBO has given DC’s upcoming live-action series Lanterns a straight-to-series order. The drama series, based on the DC comic books, consists of eight episodes, and “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Chris Mundy, who previously served as an executive producer on Ozark and on True Detective: Night Country, will be the showrunner and executive producer. Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl) will co-write Lanterns with Mundy.

“We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content. “As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”

Lanterns does not have a release date yet, but now we know that it’s still set to be the first live-action series of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU. Back when Gunn first laid out his plans for the first chapter of the DCU, he claimed that Lanterns would be the fourth project, following Creature Commandos, Waller, and Superman.

Gunn and Safran added: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Speaking of Superman, recent set photos have uncovered the looks of several main characters, including Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and David Corenswet in what is shaping up to be an incredibly controversial Superman suit.
