High time to set up more stroke centres to save young lives

Guntur: Noted neurologist Dr.P.Vijaya has observed that it was high-time to revisit the strategies to set up stroke centres across the country and also in poor nations as many young people are turning victims of the brain stroke. She said that stroke units were available in 91 percent of high-income countries while only in 18 percent of low-income countries have access to treatment. Dr Vijaya has been invited to the prestigious Global Stroke Alliance (GSA) conference held in New Delhi.
The three-day conclave of GSA was organized by the World Stroke Organization (WSO) with the primary mission is to establish a powerful global alliance committed to enhancing stroke care worldwide. Dr Vijaya was also part of a group of GSA that was designed to chalk-out the roadmap to set up stroke centres in all the districts across the country on hub-and-spoke model.
She suggested the need to increase the stroke centres across the country to save the young lives and country’s GDP. She said that getting disabled at a very young age could not only cripple the family incomes but the entire nation. She said that more than 90 percent of brain strokes are linked to 10 major modifiable risk factors.
Senior officials from the union health ministry and WSO president Dr. Sheila Martins and vice president Dr. Jeyaraj Pandian were also present during the session. Health ministers from different countries, ICMR representatives have also taken part in the event.
Representatives from all the states in India, many southeast asian countries including Bhutan, Myanmar, Maldives, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Africa, Europe and USA participated.
GSA is an intense session about brain stroke from primary prevention to artificial intelligence and robotics. The event concluded with “Global declaration on stroke” which was drafted by the World Stroke Organization and signed by all the delegates. WHO representative D Taskeen Khan noted that lifestyle modifications, controlling of diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia were the key to prevent cardiovascular deaths and disability. GSA presented the diamond award to Dr Vijaya for heading a best stroke unit at Lalitha hospital.
