Musk, 52, who was born in Pretoria in South Africa, has seen his fortune skyrocket by $88.7 billion this year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

According to the latest figures, Elon Musk now boasts a net worth of $226 billion, some $51 billion more than Arnault in second place ($175 billion).

They are followed by American Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ($172 billion) who rounds out the Top 3.
The rest of the Top 10, in order, are: Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, Larry Ellison, Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett and Sergey Brin.
