As you’ve probably noticed, Fortnite is a digital-only game – so you won’t see it on the shelves of Argos or CEX.

This means you have to download it from Nintendo’s eShop, which is available through your Switch console, before you can play it.

To do that, you’ll have to log into your Nintendo account on the Switch.

It’s important to note that you should be logged into the account you want to play Fortnite on.

Next, select the Nintendo eShop icon on the console and use the search bar to find Fortnite.

Once you’ve found it, just tap the Free Download button.

You’ll then be taken to a confirmation screen, where you’ll need to press Free Download again.

From there it will install – as long as you have enough storage.

Free up storage on Nintendo Switch

Here are three ways to free up storage on your Switch, and make the most out of Nintendo’s vast library of games

First, it’s important to remember that storage requirements vary by game – but can be a lot bigger than others.

Information about specific game storage requirements is always located on the game packaging or in the Nintendo eShop.

Note: Always make sure that you have the required storage space before buying a game.

  1. Expand the available memory on your Nintendo Switch system by purchasing a microSD card.
    • A microSD card can be used to save screenshots and software data, including downloaded software, software updates, and DLC.
  2. Delete or archive files that you are not currently using.
  3. Delete game save data on the console’s System Memory – because it cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.
    • To free up space in the System Memory, go to Systems Settings > Data Management > Delete Save Data.

Pro Tip: You don’t need to keep your Nintendo Switch on for it to download Fortnite – it will continue to install even in Sleep Mode.

Although the download may pause if you use another app or game that requires Wi-Fi.

When it’s installed, the Fortnite app will appear in your Switch library without a loading bar beneath it.

Create an Epic Games account

While you’re waiting for the game to download, you can create an Epic Games account.

You will need this account to play Fortnite, as it is used to save all of your progress and user data.

If you already have an account from your mobile, PC, Xbox or PlayStation, you should link it to your Nintendo Switch.

To create the account, go to the EpicGames website via your phone or computer.

Select Sign Up and fill in the required fills, such as your name, email address and password.

You’ll be sent an email to the address you provided which will be necessary to set up your account.

Once you select the link in the email, the Epic Games website opens up in a new browser tab and you’re automatically logged in.

From the left menu, select Connected Accounts.

Then select Connect under all of the video game networks you wish to play Fortnite on with the same account.

With your Epic Games account set up and connected to your Nintendo account, you can now open Fortnite on your Nintendo Switch.

Tap the Fortnite icon on your Nintendo Switch Home screen to open the game and play.
