Howard Stern predicts a day of reckoning may soon be on the horizon for the NFL following its decision to broadcast a playoff game exclusively on Peacock.
The league announced in May 2023 that it would have one streaming-exclusive game for the playoffs. As the regular season unfolded and playoff seeding was finalized, it was determined that game would be between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs. Because of the intrigue surrounding the game, the NFL faced significant backlash for essentially locking it behind a paywall and forcing people to subscribe to Peacock.
Members of the media were just as disappointed as the fans, with Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo being among those who slammed the league for the move.
On a recent episode of The Howard Stern Show, the legendary radio host expressed his belief that it won’t bode well for the NFL.
“They’re going to the well too many times,” Stern said. “At some point, the fans will rebel. They will.”
Co-host Robin Quivers theorized that sports are such a draw that every streaming service will look to include some kind of sports-related incentive to subscriptions.
Stern offered a simple counter to that.
“You could always do what I do,” Stern said. “Just don’t watch any of these games. Fuck them.”
