Huge number of Aussies missing $1000 Government rebate

A massive number of Australian households are missing out on up to $1072 in rebates offered to assist with the cost-of-living crisis.

Queensland Energy Minister Mick de Brenni on Saturday called on the state’s residents to check if friends and family are eligible to avoid missing out.

“It’s the biggest electricity bill support package of any state or territory,” he said.

“If your Mum, Dad, grandparent, neighbour or friend could be eligible, check in to see if they are aware of what they could be claiming.”

Under the plan, eligible households are entitled to a $700 rebate on their electricity bills on top of an existing $372 concession.

The $1.4 billion cost-of-living measure was announced at the Queensland State Budget in June alongside a $550 electricity rebate for all Queensland households.

A month later, an estimated 13 per cent of households have yet to claim the rebate.

This means as many as 270,000 electricity account holders could be missing out on the payment, the Queensland Government says, including 70,000 in the Brisbane area, 13,500 in Cairns, 12,500 in Central Queensland and 34,000 on the Gold Coast.

The rebate is targeted at residents with a valid seniors, veterans or concession card, who have been urged to contact their electricity provider to ensure any eligible rebates are applied.

“It’s as simple as calling your energy provider and registering your seniors, veterans or concessions card to your account,” Mr de Brenni said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud of the support we are providing to vulnerable households, and we don’t want anyone who is eligible to miss out.”
