FOX Weather is providing updates on Hurricane Hilary as it approaches California. The latest forecast predicts significant rainfall that could potentially break records. Hurricane Hilary is currently a powerful Category 4 storm moving towards the Southwestern U.S. Continuous coverage of the hurricane can be found here. It rapidly intensified into a Category 4 cyclone on Friday and is expected to bring significant impacts to Southern California and the Southwest over the weekend and into the following week. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of potential flash flooding and significant impacts from the rainfall in the Southwestern United States. Although the cool ocean water temperatures off the coast of California might diminish the intensity of Hurricane Hilary, forecasters are monitoring the abundant tropical moisture that could flow into California, Nevada, and Arizona. The current location of Hurricane Hilary is about 400 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, moving to the west-northwest at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. The NHC predicts that it will turn northwest on Friday morning and then northward over the weekend, with the center of the hurricane approaching the Baja California peninsula on Saturday. The Mexican government has issued weather alerts for the southern Baja California peninsula. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 45 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 290 miles. The swells generated by Hurricane Hilary will create life-threatening surf and rip currents along the southwestern Mexico coast and the Baja California peninsula. As the hurricane moves closer to the U.S.-Mexico border, Southern California and the Southwest should be prepared for a surge of tropical moisture that could impact the region. Hurricane Hilary is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 3-6 inches, with possible higher amounts of up to 10 inches across portions of the Baja California peninsula, leading to the risk of flash flooding. Heavy rain associated with the hurricane is also expected to affect California and the Southwest from Friday through early next week, with peak impacts expected on Sunday and Monday. Forecast rainfall totals of 2-4 inches, with some areas experiencing up to 8 inches, are possible in Southern California, Southern Nevada, and western Arizona. The National Weather Service (NWS) has already issued a Flood Watch for Saturday to Monday, with significant disruptions expected at the Port of Long Beach, the Port of Los Angeles, and in the metro areas of San Diego and Los Angeles. The Imperial Valley, which supplies agriculture, livestock, and lithium mining, may be particularly affected by heavy rain and flash flooding. Hurricane Hilary’s proximity to Southern California is also impacting space launch operations, with SpaceX postponing the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket with Starlink satellites. They plan to reschedule the launch next week when weather conditions improve.
