I played against Celtic transfer target Nicolas Kuhn – here are the qualities that’ll make him a star, says Max Johnston

CELTIC transfer target Nicolas Kuhn has one quality above all that will help him succeed in Scottish football.

And few people know it better than former Motherwell star Max Johnston.

The Scotland Under-21 ace faced off against Kuhn when the two met in the Austrian Bundesliga earlier this season.

Kuhn has been ever-present for Rapid Vienna this year, with 22 appearances across all competitions plus three goals and seven assists to boot.

Johnston is still trying to force his way into the starting XI at Sturn Graz on a weekly basis after his summer move from ‘Well, but his second league outing incidentally came against the man Celtic are now trying to sign. Johnston played the final 17 minutes as a sub.

SunSport exclusively revealed on January 1 that Brendan Rodgers had made the 24-year-old one of his top targets for this month.

The move has gathered pace in recent days but there is still work to be done on the final transfer fee, which could end up anywhere from £2.5m to more than £3m.

It’s believed it will be completed in the next week and right-back Johnston reckons the Hoops will have quality prospect on their hands.

He said the winger’s pace is what stands out and he will be a menace for Scottish defences.

“I came up against him when we played Rapid and, technically, he’s very good,” Johnston told the Daily Record.

“But the thing I remember most about him is how quick he is.

“He definitely has pace and he’s had a really good season here so far.

“If he signs for Celtic and brings those qualities I’m sure he’ll do well there.”

Kuhn sat out Rapid’s mid-season friendly earlier today against Wiener.

Head coach Robert Klauss insisted he WASN’T omitted from the squad because of the transfer talk – instead it was to avoid rushing him back from injury too soon.

He told Kurier: “If there was a league game, both (Terence) Kongolo and Kuhn could play. But we don’t want to risk anything.”

Meanwhile, Buckie Thistle boss Graeme Stewart could miss his team’s biggest ever match after he was sent off against Huntly for becoming embroiled in an on-pitch rammy.
