I was a Scotland rugby star but had to retire young due to injuries – now I need help to keep my new career going

HE represented his country at the top level 31 times and was a regular in the Glasgow Warriors side that made history by winning the prestigious Pro12 tournament.

But he was forced into early retirement from the sport and started a new career as a dairy farmer – though that could now be in jeopardy too.

Alex Dunbar played centre for Glasgow between 2009 and 2019 and was a regular at international level between 2013 and 2018.

He was the only Scot – and the only Scottish based player – to be included in the Pro12 team of the year for 2013-14 (the year before Glasgow’s triumph in the same competition).

Dunbar, now 33, had to call time on his rugby career earlier than planned however due to persistent injuries, after a short loan spell at Newcastle Falcons and a brief stint with Brive in France after he had left Glasgow Warriors.

Since his departure from the game he’s been working as a dairy farmer with his other half, Lois.

The couple, who got married in July 2022, describe themselves as “driven and ambitious” but their current contract is coming to an end and they are now pleading for another farm to take them on.

A social media post from the couple read: “Our contract farming agreement comes to an end in summer and we are now seeking a farm to continue our dairy farming business. We are a driven and ambitious couple with a 200 cow milking herd plus young-stock. We need around 250+ acres of grazing land. We will consider tenancies, farm conversions and joint venture/ contract farming.

“We need to move by the end of August 2024, can be before this for the right opportunity.

“Please get in touch via email [email protected]. Very open minded to different options/ ideas.

“References available.

“PLEASE SHARE.”

Alex shared the message on Twitter, alongside a further plea for work. He said: “We are looking for a farm, please share to get the word out.”

Elsewhere, Scottish darts hero Gary Anderson has revealed he only took up the sport because it was CHEAPER to play than pool at the pub.
