The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) recently organized an awareness campaign to educate the campus community about India’s three new criminal codes. The campaign, led by the Institute’s Legal Cell, was conducted under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The primary objective of the campaign was to disseminate information about the new criminal laws to the IITK community.Prakalpa Sharma, Deputy Registrar (Legal) at IITK, spearheaded the initiative, which was inaugurated by Prof. Braj Bhushan, Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur, and Vishwa Ranjan, registrar of IITK.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, will replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, while the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, will take the place of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. Additionally, the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, will supersede the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
These new laws have been crafted to better suit the needs of modern India, addressing issues such as cybercrime, social justice, and contemporary evidence procedures. The laws aim to simplify legal language, streamline processes, strengthen victim rights, and decolonize the legal framework. The new laws will come into effect on July 1, 2024.
During his address as a guest speaker, Chandan Kumar Singh, Senior Public Prosecutor, Central Bureau of Investigation, said, “The new laws will usher in significant legal reforms and establish a new social order in India. I am confident that this campaign will successfully raise awareness about the details of these new criminal codes.”
