IIT-Kanpur partners with InterDigital Inc to engage 6G prospects

LUCKNOW: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK), has entered a bilateral research partnership with InterDigital Inc., a mobile and video technology research and development company listed on Nasdaq. Their collaboration aims to develop 6G enabling technologies that will influence future wireless standards.
Within this partnership, InterDigital will provide sponsorship for research and innovation at IIT-K, focusing on advancing extreme MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) systems. These advancements are geared toward achieving higher spectrum efficiency and broader network coverage, which are essential for the deployment of 6G networks. These networks need to scale and meet the increasing bandwidth and coverage requirements driven by advanced applications such as the metaverse, holographic communications, and digital twins.
Prof. S Ganesh, the officiating director of IIT Kanpur, stated, “The partnership is timely, considering India’s release of the Bharat 6G vision document and its commitment to becoming a global leader in 6G technology. India has also launched the 6G R&D test bed. Academia plays a significant role in advanced research leading to 6G standardization and technology component development for 6G.”
This collaboration aligns with the growing cooperation between India and the United States in 6G research and standardization. It follows a joint statement between the two nations at the recent G20 summit, emphasizing the importance of collaborative research and development in 6G technologies and recognizing IIT Kanpur as a key collaborator.
Milind Kulkarni, Vice President and Head of Wireless Labs at InterDigital, expressed, “We are proud to formalize our partnership with IITK to explore and expand our expertise in the advanced technologies that will shape our 6G future.”
