MUMBAI: IIT Madras NPTEL has translated 207 technical courses, including popular ones like ‘Introduction to Internet of Things’, into Hindi. This translation initiative involved a team of 1,029 Hindi translators and 139 quality controllers to ensure accuracy and quality. Additionally, NPTEL has made 199 e-books available in Hindi on its website, along with 1,200 hours of audio recordings in Hindi, enhancing the learning experience for Hindi-speaking individuals.
The focus of NPTEL’s translation efforts lies in key disciplines such as Computer Science (35 courses), Social Sciences (32 courses), and Electrical Engineering (29 courses). Feedback from course participants has been overwhelmingly positive, especially for translations like ‘The Joy of Computing using Python’.
Efforts are underway to expand translation services further, with courses like ‘Introduction to Machine Learning’ being translated into Hindi using machine learning tools and voiceovers for improved accessibility.
Prachi Agarwal from Sanskriti University commended NPTEL’s efforts in democratizing education and praised the team’s attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in translations. Sandhya Pandey from The S.I.A. College of Higher Education Dombivli(E) highlighted the inclusivity of NPTEL courses, attributing their success to high-quality content and the recent breakthrough in breaking language barriers with regional translations.
The initiative extends to e-books and audio recordings in Hindi, enhancing learning for Hindi speakers. Efforts focus on Computer Science, Social Sciences, and Electrical Engineering disciplines, with plans to expand translation services using innovative methods. In a bid to assist learners transitioning from regional languages to English for technical education, NPTEL has translated courses into 11 languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.
NPTEL’s Translation Coordinator Prof. Rajesh Kumar emphasized the importance of breaking language barriers, stating, ‘Every language is a world in itself. Without translation, I would be confined to the borders of my own world.’
Prof. Abhijit P Deshpande, another NPTEL Translation Coordinator, highlighted the innovative methods adopted by NPTEL to make translated content accessible to learners. These methods include subtitles, video text tracks, transcripts, books with slides, and audio tracks, aiming to enhance the translation quality of science and engineering content.
NPTEL, a collaborative project of IITs and IISc funded by the Ministry of Education, was established in 2003. Initially focused on providing quality education nationwide, NPTEL now offers over 700 courses for certification every semester across 22 disciplines.
The translated materials undergo thorough review by NPTEL Quality Control experts and are available in various formats like PDF transcripts, e-books, subtitles, scrolling text, and audio formats free of cost.
