Introducing Immortals of Aveum, a fantasy shooter that combines spellcasting with guns. This first-person shooter, developed by Ascendant Studios and published by Electronic Arts, is set to release on August 3, 2023. The game is available for purchase at a price of £50/$60. The game was reviewed on an Intel core i5-13600k processor, 16GB of RAM, and an Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000. As for the platform, it was reviewed on a Steam Deck. For those unfamiliar with the game, Immortals of Aveum replaces traditional firearms with spell-like abilities that mimic the functionality of guns. Despite the unique concept, the game doesn’t offer much else in terms of innovation. However, it does provide a decent magical shooting experience. The spell effects are visually stunning and serve as a satisfying substitute for ordinary bullets. In the game, players have three colored slots known as “sigils” which represent their weapons. The red sigil is used for close-combat, the green sigil for rapid-fire, and the blue sigil for long-range shots. The game frequently introduces new sigils, allowing players to easily find a preferred weapon. Personally, I found great enjoyment in using a green sigil that mimicked a minigun throughout most of my gameplay. Aside from the sigils, Immortals of Aveum also offers blue spells that can be charged up and thrown as javelins. While challenging to execute during intense battles, successfully landing these throws is extremely satisfying. One of the game’s strengths lies in the enjoyable spell mechanics. The spells carry a sense of impact, especially when used against human enemies who react by being launched into the air while spouting gibberish curses. The chaotic nature of battles, with players and enemies unleashing various spells, adds to the overall excitement. Though it can sometimes be overwhelming to decipher the chaos, I found it to be a fun and rewarding experience when I managed to emerge victorious.Additionally, the game features “furies,” which are special powers that rely on a finite mana pool. These furies include abilities such as shield-breaking, powerful punches, and area-of-effect attacks. The inclusion of health and mana crystals encourages players to make use of these powers. The navigation during fights is smooth, with the ability to double-jump and later hover. Descending from above while unleashing a barrage of spells made me feel like a raging wizard. The game’s visuals are impressive when played on high settings, although the art direction is somewhat unoriginal. However, adjusting the visual settings allowed for a smooth experience on a weaker setup. There was a minor boss fight glitch, which is expected to be fixed with a day one patch. Despite these minor flaws, the game offers a lengthy main story, taking approximately 22 hours to complete. Numerous challenges and six optional bosses add to the replayability of the game.Immortals of Aveum proudly introduces itself as part of the ‘EA ORIGINALS’ line. However, the claim of originality is not entirely convincing. Players familiar with shooter games may experience a sense of deja vu when playing this game, as it borrows heavily from existing titles. The gameplay, particularly in regard to pulling enemies closer for melee attacks, resembles Overwatch. The puzzles involving shooting colored locks with corresponding spells feel derivative as well. The promised power of object manipulation for traversal puzzles is limited and rarely utilized. The game also includes a crafting and upgrading system for gear, which feels obligatory. Upgrading equipment only results in higher damage or increased capacity, without any meaningful choices or trade-offs. Buffs, while somewhat impactful, lack depth and feel token in nature. However, the skill tree offers a more satisfying experience, providing a range of beneficial abilities that allow players to customize their playstyle. The tree rewards players with significant bonuses, such as a 60% damage increase for certain abilities.Unfortunately, Immortals of Aveum falls short in terms of its story. The main character, Jak, is a typical wisecracking protagonist who oscillates between being boring and annoying. The story itself is unoriginal and predictable, and the dialogue attempts to mimic Marvel’s humorous banter while also incorporating cringeworthy slang. The excessive use of vulgar language throughout the game can be tiresome and detracts from the overall experience.Despite its flaws, Immortals of Aveum still manages to provide an enjoyable gameplay experience. Players seeking an EA-published magical shooter may find some satisfaction in this offering. The combination of magical spells and shooting mechanics, particularly when enemies inadvertently harm themselves, offers a unique and gratifying experience. Though the game may feel overfamiliar and lacking in identity, it remains a worthwhile choice for those seeking a magical FPS adventure. If you are interested in purchasing Immortals of Aveum, it is advised to compare prices to ensure you get the best deal.
