India Canada Row: Don’t want to go to Canada for higher studies? Germany can be a good alternative |

India Canada row: Data from the Ministry of External Affairs suggests that Canada is the second most popular study abroad destination among Indian students with 1.83 lakh of them going there between 2017 and 2022.
However, after the recent India-Canada row, Canada may not be the best option for Indian students. In fact, at a recent Educational fair in Hyderabad, representatives from Canadian Universities have discouraged students from applying to courses this year for the spring session scheduled to begin in January 2024, in light of the fact that India-Canada diplomatic ties are going downhill. On Wednesday, September 20, the Indian government issued a travel advisory to its citizens and students in Canada, asking them to take extreme caution and remain vigilant due to the deteriorating security situation in the country. However, Germany can be a good alternative for students who want to pursuing their study abroad dreams.
The number of Indian students going to Germany has increased steadily in recent years. According to data shared by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), in the winter semester of 2022-2023, a record 42,997 Indian students had enrolled in German universities. This represents a 26% increase from the previous year. It is estimated that the number of Indian students in Germany will continue to grow exponentially in the coming years, crossing the 50,000 mark by the end of 2024.
Why is Germany ideal for study abroad programmes?
There are a number of reasons why Germany is one of the easier places to get into a study programme abroad. First, German universities have a relatively open admission policy. Meaning that international students do not need to have a perfect academic record in order to be accepted. Secondly, Germany offers a wide range of English-taught programmes. This makes it possible for international students to study in the country without having to learn German first. Third, Germany has a considerably low cost of living.
Perks for studying in Germany
Students who are part of study-abroad programmes in German Universities enjoy a number of exclusive benefits, such as:

  • The tuition fee is low. Public universities in Germany do not charge tuition fees for international students. Even private universities have relatively low tuition fees. The cost of living in Germany is comparatively low compared to other major European countries.
  • There are ample job opportunities. Germany has a strong economy and a high demand for skilled workers. International students who graduate from German universities have good job prospects after graduation within the country.
  • International students who graduate from German universities are eligible for a post-study work permit. This allows them to stay in Germany for up to 18 months after graduation to find a job.
  • International students who have a job offer in Germany can apply for permanent residency after just five years.

Apply for scholarships
However, despite these benefits offered by the German universities, scholarships are a good way to cover tuition, living costs, and travel, easing the financial burden. Scholarships in Germany are available from various public and private sources. These are awarded on the basis of merit, need, or other criteria. Scholarships help you in more ways than one. Some of the popular scholarships that Indian students can apply for include DAAD Scholarship, Heinrich Böll Foundation and DeutschlandStipendium National Scholarship Programme among others.
