For the year 2023, Intersport International maintained its course. The consortium of sporting goods retailers, operating on the cooperative principle, has issued a concise annual report indicating sales equivalent to those of 2022, generating €13.7 billion in revenue last year.

Although Intersport International began 2023 on a strong note, it explained that sales decelerated after the first quarter, citing “a combination of factors such as a challenging economic and geopolitical landscape, persistent supply chain tensions, high product inventories, and rising operational costs.”

Regarding product categories, footwear and sports equipment witnessed growth last year, contrasting with the overall decline in clothing offerings.

Looking ahead to 2024, Intersport International’s CEO, Steve Evers, expressed “great optimism,” foreseeing “a dynamic year” and anticipating the ability to “regain robust growth,” particularly due to major events such as the UEFA European Football Championship in Germany and the Paris Olympic Games. He also announced “the opening of flagship stores in central Paris,” without specifying their locations.

Among its various affiliate networks, the group, headquartered in Berne, Switzerland, currently boasts 5,381 stores across 42 countries, marking an increase of 72 retail outlets from the previous year. It highlighted exceptional performances in certain markets, with double-digit sales growth in France, Greece, Ireland, and throughout the Central and Eastern European region.

In France, Intersport made headlines last year with the acquisition of its rival, Go Sport, in April through the commercial court proceedings, for which it invested €35 million. This acquisition added 72 retail points and 1,446 employees to Intersport France’s roster. The stores gradually transitioned to the new brand.

Intersport now totals 885 stores in France, employing over 15,000 individuals. Its French sales for the year 2023 will be disclosed later. In 2022, sales in France reached €3.26 billion, marking a 16% year-on-year increase.
