Iqraam Rayners won’t last at Sundowns, Junior Khanye predicts

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye doesn’t expect Iqraam Rayners to last more than a year at Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 28-year-old striker recently joined Masanadawana from Stellenbosch FC. Having netted 15 goals last season, Rayners has attracted teams from South Africa and abroad.

Khanye believes Rayners made a wrong choice by joining Sundowns.

“Truly speaking, when Rayners came to SuperSport United, the environment in Johannesburg(Pretoria) didn’t suit him,” he said. “SuperSport are not bigger than Sundowns for me in terms of achievements. Yes, they have good structures and support and are a professional team but are not like Sundowns.

Rayners will struggle at Sundowns, says ex-Chiefs star

“He never made an impact, he struggled. They played him as a winger, centre forward but[failed to make an impact]. He went back to Stellenbosch where he belongs, the environment allowed him to flourish because that’s where he comes from. He fitted like a glove and got his confidence back.”

Speaking on iDiski TV, the 38-year-old former footballer said a move to Europe might have been the best option.

“For me, he was supposed to move to Europe. It would have been easy for his agent to sell him to Europe.”

“Going to Sundowns, his(Rayners) career is done. He will be the third-choice striker behind Lucas Ribeiro and Peter Shalulile,” Khanye added.

“He will last six months to a year and after that, they will loan him. There are expectations, they want to win the CAF Champions League as well as the Betway Premiership.”

Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana has explained why he thinks Iqraam Rayners would struggle at Downs this season.
