Jim Chalmers to release intergenerational report as government spending on age pension expected to fall

Australia’s population might be getting older but government spending on the age pension will fall over the next 40 years as more people retire with a lifetime of superannuation.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers will release the intergenerational report on Thursday against a backdrop of sluggish growth in the short term and significant concerns about the state of China’s economy.

The report, which examines demographic changes between now and 2063 and the economic implications of how these interact with government policies, is the next block in the Treasurer’s reshaping of the national conversation.

The Government also intends to release its planned overhaul of competition laws in the near future, along with moves to streamline the foreign investment review board.

An employment white paper that may flag changes to work incentives and effective taxation rates will follow within the next couple of months.
