Countless memes followed throughout the week and there was no surprise that the man of the moment kicked the first goal on Saturday night.

Miers, who was celebrating his 100th game, roved the pack and ducked through a tackle before finishing truly.

But it was his celebration that immediately endeared himself to the public when he pointed both fingers to the sky – just like Messi does after he scores.

Channel 7 commentator Jobe Watson also couldn’t resist with a brilliant quote referencing the internet drama.

“There is nothing messy about that,” he said.

Social media lit up in praise for the Brownlow medallist.

“Oh Jobe Watson wins the internet after Gryan Miers kicked the first goal,” one fan said.

“Slow clapped Jobe Watson,” another said.

“Well played Jobe Watson, well played,” a third added.

“Jobe Watson going with ‘there’s nothing messy about that’ after Miers scores is elite areas” another said.

The Miers-Messi drama unfolded on Wednesday when Whately begged the culprit to pull down a “fake” tweet.

“Gryan Miers is to AFL what Leo Messi is to soccer. Messi may kick more goals, but Miers scans the field just as well. Maybe even better than Messi does,” the fake tweet says.

Whateley failed to see the amusing side, calling it “fake“, telling a person who had re-tweeted it to take it down, and telling his listeners the post must be “good for clicks”.
