Joni Mitchell made her first singing appearance on the Grammy Awards show after nearly 60 years of winning Grammys. She performed “Both Sides Now” for her debut on the telecast.
“Both Sides Now” has special significance as Mitchell’s very first Grammy Award, which she won 55 years ago. The song appeared on her “Clouds” album, for which she received her first Grammy in 1969.
Mitchell performed the song in a “Joni Jam” format, seated on a throne with her trademark cane, surrounded by all-star accompanists. This mode of performance has been a rare occurrence for her since recovering from a brain aneurysm in 2015.
At the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony, Mitchell won a Grammy for best folk album, marking her 10th career Grammy. This emotional moment saw Carlile, the album’s producer, standing beside her.
Brandi Carlile introduced Mitchell at the telecast, highlighting her influence as a singer-songwriter and her resilience in the face of adversity.
Mitchell’s Grammy performance comes after a gradual return to live appearances in the last two years, including concerts and informal musical gatherings at her home known as “Joni jams.”
Mitchell’s previous Grammy wins span from 1969 to 2022, highlighting her enduring influence and success in the music industry.
