Joondalup Festival of Motoring returns for high-octane weekend

The 2023 Tyrepower Joondalup Festival of Motoring will transform the Joondalup city centre into a high-paced race track this weekend.

Friday evening marks the start of the festival with two ticketed events: a special screening of motoring blockbuster Gran Turismo under the stars at Telethon Community Cinema ECU Joondalup and the sold-out Powerplay Corporate Go-Kart challenge.

On Saturday, the event will celebrate American and Australian muscle machines with Steel Bumpers and Beverages, a co-hosted event between the Festival and Northern Steel Car Club.

From noon on Saturday, classic, rare and exotic vehicles will be displayed in Joondalup’s Central Park, along with a pop-up bar, food trucks and live music.

Old-school American and Australian muscle machines will fill the Instant Products Display Zone on Boas Avenue, when Northern Steel Car Club members will roll into the festival for their monthly meet.

On Sunday some of Joondalup’s city centre streets will be closed to the public and used for cars in full flight.

Over the day, 120 track-ready cars will do four separate runs of the 2.2km course with the aim of crossing the finish line with the fastest time.

Last year that honour went to Troy Wilson, who expertly drove his Mitsubishi Evo X to become the inaugural Joondalup City Sprint winner.

Runner-up Matt James-Wallace will also be returning in his Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R to keep Wilson on his toes.

This year’s course will be in the reverse direction, so neither Wilson or James-Wallace will be able to fully count on their prior experience as an advantage.

Away from the track, there will be six zones in operation for attendees to explore spread around the Joondalup city centre.

The motoring festival is walking distance from the Joondalup train station and organisers encourage all attendees to take advantage of public transport.

Road closure and parking information can be found on the festival website.

Tickets are still available for Friday’s (November 24) showing of Gran Turismo at Telethon Community Cinemas in the ECU Joondalup Campus.

Doors open at 6.30pm, with the session starting at 7.45pm. Tickets can be bought via Telethon Community Cinemas.

More information about tickets, events and road closure can be found on jfom.com.au.
