As the sun begins to shine, so does our propensity for lighter, brighter colors—it’s an unspoken rule of thumb that includes our choice of manicure shade, what we wear, and how we color our hair. That last one, however, is up for debate, as Kaia Gerber just debuted a darker hair color in SoHo over the weekend.
Swapping her sun-kissed ends and highlights for a deep chocolatey hue, Gerber stepped out in the city with darker hair than she’s had in years. Forgoing the bleach has left her hair in great condition—with natural, tousled waves through her mid-lengths and ends, she put a beachy, lived-in spin on brunette, to enviable effect.
She’s not the only A-lister swapping lighter color for something a little deeper as the hot weather rolls in. Jodie Comer, who has long championed champagne blonde, seems to be growing it out, if a recent appearance on the press tour for her new film, The Bikeriders, is anything to go by. Comer’s new chestnut-brown color was the opposite of beachy blonde.
Many celebrities have transitioned back to their natural hair colors in the last few years, whether that’s Hailey Bieber and her natural brunette shade or Andie MacDowell’s salt-and-pepper curls. As well as being lower maintenance—save for the odd health and luminosity-boosting gloss treatment in a salon—forgoing professional color also inevitably saves one money and time. So perhaps it’s time to let the sun lighten your hair and let it do its own thing naturally—it sure works for Kaia and Jodie.
