Kalgoorlie College too good for Perth rivals in once again lifting Metro Cup

Kalgoorlie College captain Jace Reilly declared the squad’s 2-0 victory over Perth SC division 2 in Sunday’s Metro Cup final as the icing on the cake for the club’s 40th anniversary season.

After a scoreless first half, College grabbed the lead at the State Football Centre after Lucas Baldassarra posted the opening goal and then nailed down a memorable win when Reilly also converted.

The result lifted College to a second Metro Cup championship in 10 years, following on from their 2013 success.

College’s series triumph followed seven trips to Perth.

“I’m really proud of the group, especially because we had a few injuries,” Reilly said.

“The game itself was very scrappy, but we got over the line with a couple of good finishes.

“I think they (Perth SC) went in fairly confident, but our defence was unbelievable throughout — flawless actually.

“The last few games were definitely harder as the level of competition rose and you really have to ride your luck a little bit.

“But I believe you earn your own luck and we earned this (title) because we worked hard and the reward was a great win.”

Reilly said the entire group had embraced the travel component as part of the overall goal to win the title.

“Personally, it wasn’t too bad because you get to play at better facilities so it’s exciting and different,” he said.

“That might be different for the others, but everyone accepted it so it was never too bad.

“It’s our 40th year and we won this same cup 10 years ago, so we’re all really proud.

“We’re going to have to defend it (next year).”
