Brownings The Bakers created the footie staple which has had punters salivating for decades.

Getting hands on one was normally the highlight of any travelling fan’s visit to Rugby Park whenever their team faced Kilmarnock and since then the bakery has started supplying Darvel from within the junior ranks with the tasty pastry.

However at this year’s World Scotch Pie Awards, the prize for best football pie has gone to another savoury delight from the same region.

Beith Juniors’ Steak Pie, made by Irvine’s, won the Diamond Award at the prestigious ceremony last night.

The pie, which can be found at Bellsdale Park on matchdays and in Irvines stores, came out on top overall in taste, touch, appearance and smell, according to the judging panel.

Brownings shared the Gold (runners-up) spot with DH Robertson who produce the Steak & Black Pudding Pie for Arbroath.

Taking home Silver were Highland outfits Inverness and Ross County as well as Albion Rovers, Thornton Hibs and East Kilbride.

Pumpherston Juniors, Arbroath Vics, Inverurie Loco Works and Partick Thistle claimed Bronze.

However, the Kilmarnock Pie was crowned the best steak pie by the judges.

They also earned Gold in the iconic Scotich Pie category, but that was won by James Pirie & Son, seeing them crowned world champions for a fifth time.

Other categories included Macaroni Pie, Sausage Roll, Hot Savoury, Vegetarian Savoury, Haggis Savoury, Bridie and Apple Pies.

Alan Pirie from winning butcher James Pirie & Son said after taking home the headline award for best scotch pie: “I was delighted to have won the competition for a fifth time, I am not often speechless but today I am.

“To have been judged alongside literally the best pies in the land and to have come out on top yet again is beyond my wildest dreams.

“I really do make the best Scotch Pies in the world. This is just fantastic news and will be a huge boost to the business and to the town of Newtyle too.”

The Blairgowrie craft butchers also won the competition in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 before again scooping the top prize this year.
