It wouldn’t be the Met Gala without the memes.
Social media users had a field day poking fun at the biggest stars in Hollywood who attended the annual fashion event in New York City on Monday.
This year’s Met Gala dress code was “The Garden of Time” by J.G. Ballard, prompting the celebrities to take major risks with their over-the-top ensembles.
For example, Lana Del Rey wore an Alexander McQueen sheath gown with a red rose corsage and a dramatic headpiece.
Del Rey’s look, and many others, inspired hilarious memes that were shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, throughout the night.
Some memes like Jason Derulo falling down the stairs are an internet staple every Met Gala Monday — but this year fans got more creative than ever with their memes.
Here are the funniest memes from the 2024 Met Gala.
The carpet
The 2024 Met Gala carpet was inspired by the theme of the night: “The Garden of Time.”
The steps were covered with white and mossy green accents. The side of the stairs were lined up with greenery barriers, while the walls were painted with forest visuals.
One meme accused the unique carpet of resembling an “elevated” version of the restaurant Rainforest Cafe.
Certainly not a bad comparison.
Dan Levy
The Dan Levy memes flooded the internet as soon as he arrived at the Met Gala.
The “Schitt’s Creek” star wore a black Loewe suit with eye-popping flower detailings that started near the bottom of his jacket and his pants. His contrasting look sparked one of the best memes of the night: “Both of my personalities trying to coexist together.”
Kim Kardashian’s waist
Kim Kardashian hit the Met Gala red carpet in a skin-tight, corseted Margiela number by John Galliano. But what got everyone talking was how the reality star cinched her waist in such an extreme way for the event.
So many epic memes were born out of her barely-there waist, including a clip from a music video of a performer falling to the floor, with the caption, “Kim Kardashian’s waist as soon as she comes out of that waist trainer.”
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker channeled her “Sex and the City” character, Carrie Bradshaw, at the Met. She wore a Richard Quinn corset gown with a bejeweled floral lace, a cinched waistline and a huge headpiece. She brought her BFF, Andy Cohen, as her date.
One “SATC” fan made a meme relating Parker’s outfit to Carrie’s relationship with Big (Chris Noth).
“Carrie on her way to go get dumped by Big for the 82nd time.”
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran got his head in the game at the 2024 Met Gala.
The singer wore a light blue suit that resembled Troy Bolton’s prom tuxedo in “High School Musical 3.” One hilarious meme featured Ed side-by-side with Zac Efron’s movie character to show the fashion similarities.
“Can’t believe Ed Sheeran chose to bring back Troy Boltons tux from the HSM 3 prom scene back to life for the #MetGala.”
Rebecca Ferguson
Rebecca Ferguson went to the Met in a black gown from Thom Browne that was covered up by a massive black cape that reached her neck. Her outfit became internet fodder and the inspiration for another epic meme.
“Me when I’m in the barbers,” the post read, alongside a photo of Ferguson at the Met.
Taylor Swift
While Taylor Swift did not attend the 2024 Met Gala, there was still a meme about her that went viral on the internet.
One person shared a photo of Swift’s private plane, which is frequently tracked by her die-hard fans, sitting on the Met Gala carpet. “Taylor Swift has arrived at the #MetGala,” the meme said.
Sadly, the musician and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, decided to sit this event out.
The mens’ outfits
Many of the men who went to the Met Gala kept things simple and wore classic black suits. This included Nicholas Galitzine, Luca Guadagnino, and Matt Damon, to name a few.
The infamous “Spider-Man” meme was the perfect reaction to their outfits. A new meme featured black tuxedos edited on the group of Spider-Men all pointing at each other, with the caption, “Another year of men not following the theme and appearing like this.”
Nara Smith
TikToker Nara Smith is known for her cooking videos where she makes everything from scratch. One social media user took a clip of Smith cooking and edited it onto the Met Gala carpet. “Nara Smith is currently making gowns from scratch at the #MetGala carpet,” the meme read.
That wasn’t true, of course, but the footage did go viral on the internet.
Zendaya
All eyes were on Zendaya at the 2024 Met Gala. Not only is she a fashion icon, but she also served as a co-chair with Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Anna Wintour. She attended the event in multiple outfits, the first being a green and blue gown with metallic details, a drape, and a bow.
Zendaya posed on the carpet with her stylist Law Roach, who was decked out in all black. A meme joked that the pair looked like Cinna and Effie Trinket, respectively, from “The Hunger Games.”
“Cinna and Effie Trinket have arrived at the #MetGala.”
Barry Keoghan
Barry Keoghan seemed to be dressed as the Mad Hatter to his rumored girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter’s Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” at the Met. But one meme joked that the “Saltburn” actor looked like he was dressed by the 1800s novelist Charles Dickens. Barry still looked handsome, though, in his velvet green three-piece suit with a black top hat and black dress shoes.
Karlie Kloss
Before arriving at the Met, Karlie Kloss posed with her pals Imaan Hammam, Anok Yai, and Giovanna Engelbert in their custom Swarovski gowns outside a hotel. Their group color scheme prompted one meme that joked they looked like the fairies from “Winx.” Another meme referred to the foursome as sleeping beauty and the fairy godmothers.
