Kojonup-born indie duo Old Mervs continue to smash Aussie music scene with new song What You’ve Lost

WA-based indie duo Old Mervs are continuing to rock the Aussie music scene with a brand new single released on Wednesday giving fans the first taste of new music to drop this year.

The new single What You’ve Lost comes off the back of their recently announced biggest headline tour across Australia and New Zealand—cheekily named How The Fark Are Ya! Tour.

This huge run of shows includes multiple theatres in major cities, and a home-State performance at the 3500-capacity Fremantle Arts Centre, supported by WA acts.

What You’ve Lost is a lively and energetic track crafted by the Kojonup-raised duo and produced by the acclaimed Chris Collins, known for his work with Matt Corby, Royel Otis, and Alex Lahey.

The song is signature Old Mervs, featuring a catchy hook, complemented by breezy guitars and upbeat drums.

Vocalist and guitarist David House said while the tune kept to the sound the boys are known for, the pair mixed it up with new elements.

“This one’s been really fun to play and came along super quick and natural. It’s a classic Old Mervs tune but we had a bit of fun with it, adding more production and different elements compared to our usual formula,” he said.

Speaking about the music video, which they created with regular collaborator Andrew Briggs, drummer Henry Carrington-Jones said the idea for the clip was sparked after they stumbled across an unusual location.

“We ended up looking for cool locations for inspiration, as opposed to having a video idea first. It’s funny but pretty standard process for us. We then came across an abandoned plane yard and were quickly inspired. The rest is history with many thanks to Briggs who can bring any vision he has for a clip to life.”

Old Mervs have already had a big year, having placed #47 with Sweetheart in the Triple J Hottest 100 and performing sold-out shows nationwide on their Comin’ To A Town Near You regional tour.

They earned a nomination for Best New Artist at this year’s Rolling Stone Australia Awards and song Give It Up was #2 on the Australian ARIA Chart with more than 5.2 million streams.

The lifelong mates grew up together on farms outside of Kojonup, a small town about three hours south of Perth in the Great Southern.

As high schoolers they cleared out a stable to use as a rehearsal space for their new band, named after one of Carrington-Jone’s family farm working dogs.

From truly humble beginnings, the pair have certainly made a name for themselves in the indie-rock scene.
