CNN has obtained court documents stating that Kouri Richins, the Utah woman accused of killing her husband with a fentanyl overdose and subsequently writing a children’s book about grief, has now been accused of witness tampering. Richins currently faces murder and drug charges for allegedly poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl. The documents reveal that a letter was found in her jail cell, instructing her mother to have her brother testify falsely in the case. The letter claims that the defense wants to link Eric’s drug use to fentanyl obtained from Mexico. The court document states that this letter constitutes witness tampering, which is a felony under Utah law. A separate incident involving another letter occurred during a video conference call with her mother. Richins’ defense has filed a motion arguing that the state’s public release of the alleged letter violated the gag order in the case. The defense claims that the state has misconstrued the contents of the letter and made unfounded allegations of witness tampering. Richins’ husband was found dead in their home in March 2022, with a toxicology report revealing a lethal amount of fentanyl in his system. Around a year after his death, Richins published a children’s book on grief. CNN has reached out to Richins’ attorney and her family members for comment.
