Lake effect snow warnings are in effect starting Monday night

The upcoming days are forecasted to be very snowy as the National Weather Service has issued Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Storm Watches for our northern counties starting Monday afternoon.

A strong system is currently moving through the Great Lakes region, bringing a brief period of rain to Syracuse overnight. The primary impact of this system will be the strong westerly winds it will generate after passing through, leading to an increase in lake effect snow showers through Wednesday morning in the area.

Let’s break down the timing of the snow accumulation. By Monday night, there will be relatively light accumulation across the lower elevations, with a possibility of a few inches for the Tug Hill Plateau.

On Tuesday morning, the persistent lake effect snow band will continue to bring heavy snow to the higher elevations, with accumulation beginning to increase for central Oswego County.

By Tuesday afternoon, the lake effect snow will move south towards Syracuse, bringing light to moderate snow during the overnight hours on Wednesday.

By Wednesday morning, there is a possibility of 2-4″ of snow accumulation in Syracuse, with higher totals the further north you go.

By Wednesday afternoon, southwesterly winds should help push the lake effect snow north of the area.

Total snowfall accumulation through Wednesday afternoon:

Oswego: 4-8″

Syracuse: 2-4″

Tug Hill region: 12-20″

Pulaski: 5-10″

Rome: 3-6″

Utica: 2-5″

Skaneateles: 1-3″

These accumulation numbers are likely to change with updated model runs tonight and tomorrow.
