Lamarque, École de Pensée among 2023 CAFA winners

The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) announced on Friday the winners of the 10th edition of its annual awards show.

The star-studded event, held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, saw a gathering of renowned artists, influencers, and business leaders, both local and international. 

As part of the evening’s celebration, CAFA also unveiled an exhibition curated by Amber-Dawn Bear Robe, titled ‘Indigenous Designers Fashioning Canada’, which showcased the work of Indigenous designers Jason Baerg, Himikalas Pamela Baker, Catherine Blackburn, Orlando Dugi, Lesley Hampton, Victoria Kakuktinniq, Jontay Kahm, Jamie Okuma, and Justine Woods. 

“We are honoured to be celebrating our tenth anniversary this evening in the company of our incredible fashion community,” said Vicky Milner, CAFA president. 

“I’m very touched to see many familiar faces here tonight who have supported CAFA’s mission from the very beginning, however I’m also so thrilled to welcome many new faces who are trailblazing the future of fashion, not just here in Canada, but on an international level.” 

Among the winners, the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award was presented to Lamarque.  Meanwhile, the Menswear Designer of the Year Award was presented to École de Pensée by Director X.

Among emerging talent in the Canadian landscape, Dorian Who was recognized in the fashion category, while Noura Sakkijha received honours in the emerging accessory category.

In the accessories category, Vitaly took home the prize. The outerwear designer of the year award, which recognizes a Canadian outerwear designer who has made a lasting impact on the outerwear industry in Canada and abroad, went to Rudsak. 

The Outstanding Achievement Award went to Dani Reiss, chairman and CEO of Canada Goose. Under his leadership, Canada Goose transformed from an industrial manufacturer to a globally recognized consumer-facing brand. 

The International Canadian Designer Award was presented to Justin R. Saunders, founder of JJJJound. Saunders, who initially launched JJJJound as a digital mood board, has grown it into a collaborative design studio and reference for the design community.

The gala also recognized two remarkable Changemakers – Joanna Griffiths, founder and president of Knix, and Amber-Dawn Bear Robe. 

Among other industry professionals, the Stylist of the Year Award was presented to Nadia Pizzimenti; Triarchy received the Sustainability Award; and the Makeup Artist of the Year Award was awarded to Simone Otis.
